Sugar cookies
Every time I try to make cut out sugar cookies I end up very disappointed. Either the dough is too sticky or something else goes wrong. Does anyone have a sugar cookie recipe that they have used several times and really really like? And any tips to rolling out the dough and cutting shapes? I want to make cookies for the preschool kids to decorate on Thursday. Please share your recipes and advice!

I always use the recipe from How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman (great book, it was a wedding gift). They're rich and buttery, almost like shortbread cookies.
2 sticks butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 tablespoon milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
Cream butter and sugar, then add egg.
Combine flour, salt, and baking powder in a bowl. Mix dry ingredients into the butter-sugar mixture. Add milk, then vanilla.
The recipe says to shape into a disk and refrigerate, but I'm pretty sure I never do that. My dough is usually stiff enough to use right away. But if it's too sticky, put it in the fridge for a couple of hours. It says to roll out on lightly floured surface to 1/8 inch thick. I think that's too thin, it makes for crispy cookies. I like mine a little on the softer side, so I don't roll them quite as thin. Bake on lightly greased baking sheet at 400 degrees for 6-10 minutes (just watch them to make sure they don't burn). Good luck and have fun!
I use this recipe:
1/2 c shortening
1 c sugar
1 egg
1/2 c milk
2 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsp baking powder
3 cup flour
I just cream the first 5 ingredients, add the dry ingredients till sticky (this recipe is VERY sticky) and then put it in the freezer. About 10 minutes later I take out just what I want to roll out and then do it really fast! It seems like a lot of work, but they are very good. Whenever the dough gets too sticky I just stick it back in the freezer. If you have an up and down freezer (not side by side) you could roll out the dough on a cookie sheet and if the dough gets too hard to work with, just put the whole cookie sheet in the freezer for a few minutes. Oh ya, don't forget to flour the surface you roll the dough out on! :0) Bake at 350 for 10 minutes.
Good luck.
